Statement in response to the Independent Review of Maternity Services, Nottingham University Hospitals

Professor Habib Naqvi, Chief Executive of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, said:

“We commend Donna Ockenden and her team for highlighting deep-seated causes of inequalities in maternal and neonatal care, including a focus on discrimination and racism, as part of the ongoing Nottingham Review. The recognition of these systemic issues is essential in our collective efforts to create equitable healthcare systems.

“We look forward to working further with the Review team as we continue our work to dismantle barriers and promote health equity.

“Together, we strive to create healthcare environments that are inclusive, respectful, and responsive to the needs of all individuals and communities regardless of background.

“Earlier this year, we launched our innovative 15-month Learning and Action Network to address the gaps seen in severe maternal morbidity, perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity between women of different ethnic groups.”
